Load OUT!

Started in 2010, Load OUT! is our bi-annual reuse & repurposing riot that establishes a local distribution spot for organizations and businesses to share materials they no longer need with artists, while providing free responsible recycling opportunities to the community at large. Since the program began, nearly 46 tons have been diverted from the waste stream. Load OUT! is a member service also open to the public and part of our resource sharing initiatives that explore creative solutions to the complex challenge of urban and artistic sustainability.

We are happy to partnering with Lower East Side Ecology Center GrowNYCWearable Collections, and United War Veterans Recycling for e-waste & clothing/textile collection.

Donating to Load OUT! (Individuals)

Loud_Out_2015_byBaranova-0173If you are individual interested in contributing to Load OUT!, you may bring your items on the day of. All materials must be clean and in immediately reusable condition, requiring little or no repair. All items/donations must be portable (aka no large furniture) and lightly used, be it clothes, textiles, household items (appliances, kitchens supplies, etc).

Items we CAN NOT accept at Load OUT!:

  • beds or bedding
  • furniture items including filing cabinets
  • pianos
  • toxic chemicals
  • food
  • any form of trash or recycables aka no tupperware
  • large appliances: refrigerators, microwaves, or air conditioners

What kind of textiles and e-waste can FAB take in?
Textiles acceptable for drop-off are clean and dry clothing, paired shoes, bedding, linens, hats, handbags, belts, fabric scraps 36”x36” or larger — all of which will be sorted for reuse or recycling through Wearable Collections.

E-waste acceptable for drop-off is computers, monitors, fax machines, copiers, televisions, DVD players, VCRS, radios & stereos, telephones, digital cameras, printers, scanners, keyboards & peripherals, cell phones, remote controls, tape players, answering machines, electric typewriters, game systems, pagers, and batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc.).

All e-waste collected will be safely and responsibly recycled by Lower East Side Ecology Center.

Can I get a tax-deductible receipt for my donation?
FABnyc will only issue tax-deductible letters to groups requesting letters in advance of their drop-off. All groups donating to Load OUT! will be listed as “donors” to the Load OUT! event on FABnyc’s website. If you wish to give anonymously, please let FABnyc know when you drop off.

What if I’m not sure whether my item can be accepted?
Please contact us in advance if you have questions about an item’s suitability.

If you bring an item to drop off that we cannot accept because it endangers our staff or space, we will ask that you take it away.

How will I transport my items away?
For small items, see our “How To Be a Good Salvager” info below. For furniture–sized items, we recommend booking a car service or truck ahead of time.

How to Be a Good Salvager:

  • Be prepared to take away small items. Bring bags, rolling carts, tape, and string to make carrying away your items easier.
  • If you are in search of a big item, please either arrange to have transportation for that item available that day or research other options such as ZipCar or car services in the area.
  • Keep your mind open. Most items require a little love to be perfect, so as a good salvager use your imagination to see what something could become.

Why does FAB charge the general public an entrance fee?
FABnyc has no direct funding for this program and is taking on all costs of this event including liability insurance, disposal of what is not taken, staffing, collection, promotion, and partnerships. This small entrance fee will help cover those costs.

What happens to items that are not taken away?
FABnyc partners with various reuse, recycling, and salvage groups to make sure that anything not taken away by individuals during Load OUT! will be picked up and properly recycled or disposed of later in the week.

Previous partners for helping make this event possible: Film Biz Recycling, GrownNYC, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Wearable Collections, Rockefeller Foundation Cultural Innovation Fund, Con Edison, Eileen Fisher, Duo Multicultural Arts Center, and Rod Rodgers Dance Company.
